What to Know and Expect from Preschool Picture Day

Suggestions on How to Dress your Preschooler for Picture Day

I get this question all the time, and I totally get it! It can be tricky knowing what will photograph well and look best! But I always just say…keep it simple.

Solid colors or patterns that read solid really translate well with the style of photograph that will be captured on picture day. I really like neutral colors like gray, cream, whites, blues, blacks, soft pinks, but I’m sure any color you choose will be grand. Avoid logos, graphics, or really bold patterns that can distract from your child’s cute face and expressions. Layers or textures like a chunky knitted sweater, eyelet, tulle, denim, or a shirt with a collar can really add visual interest and depth to a portrait. Just make sure your child is comfortable in what they’re wearing. I will be able to get better results when your child is at ease!

Will My Child Be Photo Ready

Yes! I will be photographing your child at the beginning of class before they have a chance to get dirty or become rumpled. I will also have wipes for dirty faces or boogers and a comb for fresh hair. Don’t worry, I will make sure your child is looking their best!

These Will Not be your “Average” School Pictures

I love to spend just a bit of time getting to know your child before I start photographing them. I like asking them if they have any funny jokes, find out what they want to be for Halloween, and learn what they like to do for fun. This helps most kids feel more comfortable with me and I’m really able to capture authentic smiles and true personalities.

Sometimes though, a child is just more content just gazing into the camera. I LOVE these images! Smiles are fantastic and I know this is what most parents expect. However, a child’s personality can be expressed in far more ways than just a smile. I will never force your child to do something they are uncomfortable with. I promise you that your child’s portraits will still be beautiful and a treasure you’ll want to keep forever!
